  1. Interesting lists! There are a couple of books on there that I thought were spec fic and wouldn’t have necessarily have thought of as crime!

    • Yes, isn’t it wonderful to see Aussie crime pushing into other genres, finally?

It’s often worried me that there have been few writers, or perhaps fewer judges in this country who can understand the additional challenges for such stories – not just in the world building and plotting, but also in the physical shelving and marketing. From the winners we’ve seen in the past, there has *seemed* to be a definite bias against cross genre crime… sticking more to the mainstream spectrum of vanilla to dark crime… But most likely that’s just boiled down to a lack of agreement amongst a judging panel, since it’s often wiser and less dangerous to pin the accolades on the tried and true, purer genre writers…

yet for us, as readers, isn’t it absolutely fabulous and encouraging to see spec fic crime making the long list at last. It’s like a feast of new flavours!!!!! 🙂
